Vedavyasa and sages had written the Mahabharata in around 750 BCE whereas in the 600 BCE, both Kalidasa and Bhasa had written a Mahakavya called Karnabharam, describing his life-story. In the Mahabharata, around 40% of Shlokas are dedicated to Karna. He is the most celebrated hero in both ancient and modern versions of Mahabharata. Since times immemorial, his glory has been sung by Narada and other sages. In the swayamawara also, all the kings and sages applauded Karna's valour.

In the Draupadi swayamwara too, he defeated and spared Arjuna's life where Arjuna lied about him being a Brahmin and was spared by Karna. However, Lakshmana swayamwara is mentioned in Puranas and not in Vyasa's texts. In the Lakshmana swayamwara, Karna broke the Vishnu bow single-handedly where warriors such as Bhima, Arjuna, Duryodhana failed to even lift it but Krishna forcefully abducted lakshmana then. In the Asawari Swayamwara also, Karna arrested 100 kings through a single arrow and released multiple arrows through that arrow and married Padmavati. He had a duel with Jarasandha and defeated him in a single day and Jarasandha gifted him the city of Champa(present day-Bihar). Just like every protagonist of epics, Karna had the record of winning most of the Swayamawara- In Bhanumati swayamawara, Karna single-handedly defeated many kings like Shishupala, Jarasandha, Rukmi etc. He could have changed the course of war on the 17th day by arresting Yudhisthira unlike in the case of Drona but kept his vow. In his military career, Karna defeated almost every king- the 5 Pandavas, Abhimanyu, Ghatotakacha, Dhristadyumna, Satyaki multiple times. Around 11 akshounis were brought to the gates of Hastinapur by Karna. Hastinapur became the most powerful because of Karna. By completing the Vaishnava Yagya, he actually had changed the entire political scenario of India at that time becoming the 'trunk' of the Kauravas. At the time of Yagna, a lot of sages attended this Yagya, Karna donated a lot of money and gold to the sages and writers and they all sung the glories of Karna. He completed the greatest Vaishnava Yagya by defeating the entire world on a single chariot and levied taxes from kings making Karna the richest person in the Indian subcontinent. He was known as 'Vrisha' by the Lords of the world.

He possessed all the qualities of an ideal human being. He is described as the son of the Lord Sun because of which he always looked young and had a fair complexion.
